Report: Bentley plotting Dakar effort with used VW Touareg racers?

Bentley EXP 9 F

Bentley is an automaker not without its own racing pedigree, but the bulk of that is anchored in the 1920s and at Le Mans, to which it returned in winning form in the earlier part of the new millennium with the Speed 8. The latest development could, however, see the Flying B marque enter into another class of motorsport competition altogether.

That opposite end of the endurance racing spectrum is the torturous Dakar rally. We first published rumors of Crewe's consideration of the possibility back in November, but according to CAR Magazine, those rumors are apparently kicking into high gear.

That much is owed largely to the emergence of the above-pictured EXP 9 F program, Bentley's concept SUV currently under development. Well, sorta. Bentley's parent company Volkswagen recently withdrew from the Dakar rally after winning it three times in a row - ostensibly to focus on its new World Rally Championship effort, but spurring rumors all the same of it transferring the team to another brand.

Given that the EXP 9 F is based (or would be, anyway) on an architecture related to the Touareg - the race model of which is what the VW team used to dominate the event - the facilitation of Bentley's take-over of the program could prove even more straight-forward than the manner in which Audi successfully supported Bentley's Le Mans team.

To wit, the boys from Crewe are said to be in the process of buying back all the Race Touareg rigs - complete with their 2.5-liter twin-turbo diesels producing 300 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque - that Volkswagen sold to privateer teams upon its departure, suggesting rather poor planning and perhaps only a passing resemblance to the eventual production EXP 9 F (which, incidentally, isn't expected to look like the concept above).

Report: Bentley Continental GT V8 hits 24 mpg highway

05/14/2012   [Original: Autoblog]

Bentley Continental GT V8

The Bently Continental GT with the W12 is rated at 12 city/19 highway on traditional premium, 8 city/14 highway on E85, and easily less than that on an excited right foot. When we drove the Continental GT V8 at launch we were told that official EPA mileage could be rated as high was 24 mpg on the highway, and that, even with the right-foot factor, would be a generous improvement over the W12 for sacrificing just 67 horsepower and almost nothing in performance. It turns out Bentley told the truth, the official EPA numbers are 15 city/24 highway.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the 12 combined mpg of the W12 is raised to 15 combined with the V8. Better yet, drivers will save $1,000 on premium unleaded every year, the V8 needing $3,400 worth of the explosive liquid, the W12 needing $4,300. On top of the fact that the V8 is roughly $18,000 less than the W12, with those annual savings you'll be able to add a couple more ties to your collection every year, or one bespoke shoe. Start with the right foot - that's where the action is.

Report: Bentley/Bugatti chief Durheimer moving to Audi in management shake-up

05/13/2012   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Hirings/Firings, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Volkswagen

Wolfgang Durheimer and Franz-Josef Paefgen

Running a high-end automobile manufacturer like Bentley or Bugatti has got to be a dream job for most any business executive. And Wolfgang Dürheimer gets to run them both - but not for much longer, according to the latest reports coming in from trade publication Automotive News Europe.

According to ANE, the former Porsche development chief is set to move to Audi in a broad management restructure aimed at reducing the average age of Ingolstadt's seven-member management board. In his new capacity, Dürheimer (53) is tipped to replace Audi's current development chief, Michael Dick (60), who is expected to retire later this year.

Along with Dürheimer, Volkswagen marketing director Luca de Meo (44, formerly of Fiat) is expected to replace Audi sales chief Peter Schwartzenbauer (60), while Volkswagen purchasing manager Bernd Martens replaces his Audi counterpart Ulf Berkenhagen, who will take up the same role at the group's commercial vehicles division. Audi production chief Frank Dreves is also expected to leave his post, though no replacement was named in the report.

Of course with any game of musical chairs - or "Reise nach Jerusalem" as they call it in German for some reason - replacements will need to be found for the positions being left vacant. We'll be watching who is named head of Bentley and Bugatti, both roles that Dürheimer assumed from Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen (pictured above at right), who last we heard was still in the group organizing its classic vehicles division.

Report: Bentley returning to 24 Hours of Le Mans

Bentley at Le Mans

AutoWeek reports Bentley is slowly building a team for the brand's return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The automaker has hired Graham Humphrys as a consultant. Humphrys penned the BMW V12 LMR that took the win at the 1999 Le Mans, and he's now tasked with heading up a feasibility study for the British luxury manufacturer.

According to Brian Gush, chassis and powertrain director for Bentley, the automaker is currently exploring which class would best suit the company. Humphrys' 30 years of racing experience, including roles on vehicles like the March 82G Group C car, and with companies like Aston Martin and Spice Engineering, should prove instrumental in narrowing down the field.

In the past, Gush has hinted that Bentley would be at home in the GT class, speciffically in the GT3 category. If true, the company will likely campaign a version of the current Continental Supersports, though the automaker could just as easily wait for the next-generation Continental before jumping into the Le Mans fray. AutoWeek says there's no time table for the manufacturer's return at the moment.

Report: Bentley aims to sell 3K SUVs annually... including plug-in hybrid version

Bentley EXP 9 F - front three-quarter view

If you want a top-of-the-line SUV with serious performance capabilities, look no further than the Volkswagen Group. Its Porsche unit has had tremendous success with the Cayenne, a vehicle that has doubled its sales all on its own - and that's not even accounting for the Volkswagen Touareg or Audi Q7 that share some of its underpinnings. Keen to capitalize on that success, the German auto giant is overseeing the application of the same formula to two of its other divisions: Lamborghini, which just unveiled its new Urus concept, and Bentley, which is working on an SUV of its own.

The British marque has been showcasing the EXP 9 F concept to preview what it has in store. It only hinted at powertrain possibilities upon its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show, but at the Beijing Motor Show, it got ever so slightly more specific. Like the Continental range, the production version of the Bentley sport-ute would pack a 600-horsepower, 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12, but offer the (relatively) more sensible 500hp, 4.0L twin-turbo V8 as well. The bigger news, however, is the V6 plug-in hybrid option which Bentley is planning for its SUV, enabling it to travel up to 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) on electric-only mode, while rocketing to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than five seconds.

Bentley projects the variety of powertrain options will help it sell 3,000 units of the vehicle once it enters production in 2015 - the same figures sister-company Lamborghini is projecting for the Urus. To put that into context, consider that Bentley sold just over 7,000 vehicles (from its current Continental and Mulsanne lines) around the world last year. That's still a far cry from the number of Cayennes that Porsche churns out - it delivered nearly 13,000 of them in the United States alone last year - but then the EXP 9 F is expected to carry a price tag north of $200,000 (double the price of even the most expensive Cayenne Turbo) while sharing common components to make its first entrance into SUV market a lucrative one for the Flying B brand.

Scope out the fresh high-resolution images we've added to the gallery above for another look at the EXP 9 F (which is still expected to look different by the time it comes to production), and scroll down for the press release containing powertrain information.

Official: Bentley honors Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee with 60 special Mulsannes

2012 Bentley Mulsanne Diamond Jubilee Edition

It's not every day that a country celebrates the diamond jubilee of its reigning monarch. In fact, this is only the second time they're doing so in Great Britain, making the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II a cause for, well... jubilation. And to help with the festivities, Bentley has launched an exclusive special edition. But rather than make it another Continental, this time it went with the top-of-the-line Mulsanne.

Limited to just 60 examples, the Bentley Mulsanne Diamond Jubilee Edition was unveiled not in the UK itself, but in Beijing - the capital of the country that is now Bentley's largest market, where the automaker has just opened one of its largest showrooms, and where the Beijing Motor Show is now getting under way.

For the special edition, Bentley's own in-house coachbuilder Mulliner (which also built the unique State Limousine that carries Her Majesty about) gave the Mulsanne such special touches as gold-embroidered headrests, veneered fold-down tables in the back and leather cushions, all with the gold motif of a classic royal carriage.

The jubilant Mulsanne can be ordered in a variety of muted combinations of the colors of the Union Jack, but one would simply not discuss the matter of the bill in polite company. You are, however, invited to peruse the press release below, as well as the high-resolution images in the gallery above.

Official: Bentley checks in at the St. Regis

Bentley at the St. Regis

You've probably heard it a hundred times before: a product or service calling itself the Rolls-Royce of its category, or the Mercedes-Benz of another. Well you might call the St. Regis the Bentley of hotels, and not by some spurious correlation.

The British automaker has been using the chain's high-end hotels around the world for years to launch its new models, and last year kicked the relationship up a notch by hosting a driving event through the Italian countryside for Bentley owners and guests of the St. Regis hotels in Rome and Florence. Now that they're done flirting, the two luxury marques are about to consummate the relationship with a more comprehensive partnership.

The freshly inked collaboration will see fleets of Continental Flying Spurs stationed at St. Regis hotels around the world from Singapore and Abu Dhabi to the flagship location in Manhattan. But that's not the end of it.

The St. Regis and its associated locations in The Luxury Collection of hotels and resorts in the Starwood group will also be hosting a series of driving programs, special events and brand initiatives for Bentley and guests of the hotels, starting with the Springtime Bentley Grand Tour that will take participants over the course of two days from Vienna to Salzburg behind the wheel of the new Continental GT. Scroll down for the full press release.

Report: Bentley to show SUV concept unaltered in Beijing

Bentley EXP 9 F Concept

Automotive News reports Bentley is staying the course with the company's EXP 9 F SUV Concept. The ultra-luxury automaker plans to bring the vehicle to the Beijing Motor Show exactly as it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, despite the fact that the concept didn't exactly debut to resounding acclaim. Critics described the design as awkward and unbecoming of nameplate like Bentley, but the automaker says it wants to vet the design in as many markets as possible before finalizing the exterior. Here's hoping the crowds in China are as repulsed as those in Switzerland.

The EXP 9 F has already been green-lit for production, and while we have no qualm with the thought of a high-riding luxury brute with a twin-turbo 12-cylinder engine under the hood, we'd like to see something a little less muddled outside. Bentley says an SUV will give the company a leg up in markets like the Middle East and China, where luxury SUVs remain king. Through the first two months of this year, the company's sales are up 66 percent in China, putting the country ahead of the United States as the largest market for Bentley products.

Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre, hosts of The List driving a Bentley on PCH

In case you hadn't noticed, we're now actively using your suggestions for new episodes of The List. We started the series with a few of our own, but suggestions from viewers like you have been flooding our inbox since the first episode. Race in the 24 Hours of LeMons? That was your idea. Visit an automotive museum? Your idea. And so is today's episode: Drive the PCH.

California's Pacific Coast Highway is known as much for its amazing views as it is for the enjoyable cruising that can be had along its asphalt. It's the type of drive where the destination is less meaningful than the trip that got you there and people you met along the way. In this episode of The List, Jessi and Patrick are given the keys to a suitably ostentatious droptop and sent north from Los Angeles to discover what the PCH has in store for them.

While the PCH is arguably one of the best roads in the country for cruising, every state has a similar road that shows off their unique, natural beauty. What's the best cruising road in your state? Let us know in Comments so we can try it out the next time we're in the neighborhood.
